The production of the first of ten prints was thoroughly documented by Paper Fortress Films and can be viewed below. 3 NEW POSTERS FOR EVENTS IN DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE
If I had to name the one thing people like to do most in East Tennessee, and near everywhere else in the world for that matter, I'd have to say it just might be eating. Therefore, many of the events and festivals taking place in and around the Downtown Knoxville area are centered around food. Two of our springtime favorites are the International Biscuit Festival and the Market Square Farmers' Market. Yee-Haw has recently printed three fine letterpress posters announcing and commemorating these events.

The long-awaited first official issue of Reed Pages has just come out, and Yee-Haw is honored to be featured in its pages among many other great artists and inventors. MEAT PRINT OF THE DAY: NEW YORK STRIP
Known in places other than the Big Apple as the Delmonico, Club Steak, Shell Steak, Top Loin Steak, Hotel Cut Steak and Ambassador Steak, the New York Strip Steak's namesake seems to be a bit of a mystery. Some say the shape of the cut resembles that of the island of Manhattan, others say it is simply named after New York because of its presence in the many steakhouses of the city. Others would argue that the term first appeared on menus of restaurants in the Western United States in the late 1800's as a way of describing this particular cut of meat and the way it was prepared and cooked.

Either way, it's a fine cut of meat and it tastes good if it's done right. Furthermore, while one can only enjoy a steak while it is being consumed and shortly thereafter, this print will serve to remind its possessor of the joys of steak consumption on a daily basis for years to come. MEAT PRINT OF THE DAY: PORK CHOP
Over the course of the next few days, we'll feature some of our recent work centered around meat, and we've opted to begin with the beloved Pork Chop. The red run was executed by using Gothic Woodtype and a laser-engraved woodblock made from a pork chop purchased at a local grocery and photographed in-house. White and black blocks were routed and then detailed by hand. The black was double printed to give a rich glossy flat finish which is almost mirror-like. The print is available for purchase here.

While many may not dig on swine, some have found the greatest comfort in this particular cut of meat. Bluesman Jim Jackson recorded his account of this solace in his 1928 Memphis recording "I Heard the Voice of a Pork Chop."

I stopped to rest my feet
I sat down under an old oak tree and there went fast asleep
I dreamt about sitting in a swell cafe as hungry as a bear

A friend in town just alerted us to some recent exposure we received on this new iPad app called "The Daily," which is apparently a huge deal in today's world of to-the-minute news. Our Robert Johnson woodblock print was featured in the "Slice of Life" section on the day this new revolutionary technology was launched and made available to the public. YEE-HAW WORK FOR JACK DANIEL'S WHISKEY FEATURED IN LAST YEAR'S TYPE DIRECTORS CLUB ANNUAL
It was just brought to our attention that a pre-presidential election campaign we worked on with Arnold Worldwide in Boston was featured in the Type Director's Club Typography Annual(#30) last year. Principal faces included Fenway, Jasper, Lynchburg, Motlow and Gothic Woodtype, which are definitely not listed by frequency of use. One can delight in the fact that said Gothic is referred to here as "woodtype" in its one-word form (as opposed to two-worded "wood type"). This one-word treatment seems as though it is gaining more validity as time goes on and the use of woodtype becomes more widespread, though computer spell-checking programs do not yet recognize it as proper and correct.

One should also note that credited designer Adam Ewing Hickman should be referred to hereafter as Adam Hickman Ewing.

The exhibition is curated by Graham Bignell of New North Press and graphic designer Richard Ardagh and features prints and publications by progressive practitioners from around the world. To coincide with the exhibition, New North Press has published the first of an on-going series of collaborative prints by contemporary artists, designers and wordsmiths.

PONDEROSA STOMP: LINE-UP PRINT
This 46x18" print was printed in 4 runs on a Vandercook 219 Power Proving Press. By printing from both ends of the paper, the artists were able to create a print twice as long as the machine was originally intended to produce. PONDEROSA STOMP: DUANE EDDY PRINT
This two-color letterpress print on chipboard was produced through the use of carved linoleum blocks, antique lead and wood type as well as newly manufactured wood type. Photo block of Duane Eddy was lazer-engraved into wood. The wood-block for the green flat was carved using a Wesel Radial Arm Router and finished using hand tools.

Duane Eddy’s reign as King of Twang took off with the album “Have Twangy Guitar, Will Travel” which went to #5 on the charts in 1959. His sound came from his collaboration with a then DJ named Lee Hazlewood, driving hits like “Rebel Rouser” “Peter Gunn”, “Cannonball”, “Shazam” and “Forty Miles of Bad Road” and helping to popularize electric guitar. In 1994 Eddy was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

This two-color dodger was hand-printed on a Vandercook SP-15 using antique lead and wood type and ornamentation as well as a routed wood block for the gold flat. The laser-engraved display type for "LIL' BUCK SINEGAL" was manufactured in house along with the photo-wood block seen in the form here.

The best guitar slinger South Louisiana has to offer, Paul "Lil' Buck" Sinegal honed his chops as an Excello session man and Clifton Chenier's longtime guitarist. Revered for his work with Lil' Bob (of "I Got Loaded" fame), Rockin' Dopsie, and Fernest Arcenaux, Lil' Buck also recorded his own killer instrumentals - including "Cat Scream" and "Monkey in a Sack" - for the La Louisiane label in the late '60s. More recently, he co-founded the Lafayette-based all-star aggregation Cowboy Stew Blues Revue. In 1999, Lil' Buck was inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame.

PONDEROSA STOMP: SUGAR PIE DESANTO PRINT
This two-color letterpress print on Clay-coated Newsback was produced through the use of carved wood blocks, antique lead and wood type as well as newly manufactured wood type. Along with the wood blocks containing photographic information, the new type was produced in-house on a 100 watt laser engraver. The block for the blue flat (pictured below) was carved using a Wesel Radial Arm Router and finished using hand tools.

Sugar Pie Desanto's career began at a talent show when Johnny Otis spotted her talent (she won) and offered her a contract on the spot. She joined his revue and he nicknamed her Sugar Pie. While she is best known for hits like “I Want to Know”, which hit #4 on the R&B charts in 1960, “Soulful Dress” in 1964, and duets with Etta James on “Do I Make Myself Clear” and “In the Basement, Part 1”, she is a songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Fontella Bass, Little Milton, Minnie Riperton and The Dells. Sugar Pie has also been known to bust out free standing back-flips on stage.

The Ponderosa Stomp is an American roots music festival dedicated to recognizing the architects of rock-n-roll, blues, jazz, country, swamp pop, and soul. Founded in New Orleans and produced by the non-profit Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau, a diverse group of music fanatics who have presented over 50 concerts with over 200 musical legends, the Stomp always succeeds in exposing rare musical icons to their adoring fans and to new audiences. The Stomp itself has now become legendary in reviving careers and giving a new lease on musical life to so many performers.

Yee-Haw Industries houses the offices of the Knoxville Chapter of the Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau and is a long-time sponsor of the Ponderosa Stomp. We've donated promotional pieces to the Stomp for years, and have just these past couple weeks had three presses running to produce 7 printed pieces for this year's event. Over the course of the next week leading up to this year's Stomp, we'll show you the work and spotlight some of the musicians featured thereon.

ROTOVISION AND CHRONICLE BOOKS RELEASE NEW BOOK SURVEYING CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES IN LETTERPRESS
Yee-Haw's own Adam Hickman Ewing prepared the foreword for a new book compiled by Charlotte Rivers, available from RotoVision as Reinventing Letterpress in the UK and from Chronicle Books as The Little Book of Letterpress in the USA. The first few pages of the book give a brief history of letterpress printing and go on to provide a layman's look into traditional and more modern printing practices. A word about the work from Kevin Bradley:
This body of prints exists as a testament to my less-than-anal methods of printmaking. This collection consists of mis-registered, mis-inked and otherwise mis-guided efforts of the edition process. These prints are a by-product of the original editions. They have not been treated or considered special. They were at first bastard prints; the proper term for them is “make-ready prints” used for alignment and the pressure adjustment on the press while printing other editions. Of course they have also evolved into their own during the process of over printing and excessive layering of information; they have become a working history of what happens on the press.

I have always been attracted to the accident. That is where the mystery lives. I feel like the things we throw away and discard without thought are often things of simple beauty and truth that cannot be achieved consciously. The make-ready print serves a purpose to the printmaker in that the accident can be incorporated into editions and still keep the vitality of surprise that the process tries to kill.

These prints exist as a working conversation between type and image, between content and concept and between form and function. These 41" x 29" prints are hand-inked and hand-printed on a 4'x10' Tackach relief press using wood type, lead type and carved wood blocks at the studio of Yee-Haw Industries in Knoxville, Tennessee, over a period of three years (2006-2009). They are part of a larger series of make-ready prints that document the history of a working letterpress shop from 1997 until present.

LETTERPRESS IN IOWA
On a recent trip back to Iowa I was able to stop in the town of Panora's 'Historic Village'. There I found a small building dedicated to the newspaper print shop. One part I enjoyed were some actual sale posters from the area ranging from 1865-1900. These posters incorporated variations of wood type that Yee-Haw still uses today.

LOOKING BACK...
This panoramic view of early day Yee-Haw was captured by design mastermind Tony Brock in the year 2000...so much unused space. According to Hamburger, Yee-Haw has been bought out by corporate health and hygiene super giant Kimberly-Clark, and now busies itself printing inserts for tampon boxes rather than making posters for "crappy local bands"...While earlier passing a noisy construction sight, Hamburger said "Put them on stage; that's what you came to hear anyway." The festival was written up in yesterday's New York Times.

BIG EARS FESTIVAL
Hey y'all. Wanted to let you know of a sweet little festival coming Knoxville's way (if you haven't already heard). For those of you thinking about venturing over, now's the time. This is definitely one festival not to be missed. Such acts as Antony and the Johnsons, as well as Philip Glass, Fennesz, and Dan Deacon will all be performing, right here in Knoxville! We've polished off the cookie plate and are now back in the shop gearing up for 2009's upcoming events. NEW OBAMA PRINTS
In support of the Obama campaign, we've teamed up with the folks down the road to create several different presidential election posters promoting Barack Obama. These prints include a smaller "Barock the Vote" poster up through the large "Elect Obama/Biden '08", printed on the large Takach upstairs. All of these prints are available from the Democratic Party of Knoxville's headquarters downtown on Clinch Avenue and through Yee-Haw.

Also, take a peek at Kevin Bradley's giant 'Presidential Wrestling' poster, with a vice-presidential partner soon to follow. 'Presidential Wrestling' is currently featured in an exhibition at the Pratt Institute's Manhattan Gallery.

FAREWELL
We'd like to say good bye and good luck to 4 of our Yee-Haw family members (pictured above top to bottom): Bryan Baker, who has relocated to Brooklyn, New York in the pursuit of his artistic endeavors. Lisa Higginbotham, who has left her work as shop wholesale manager to concentrate on her Masters Degree in Social Work at the University of Tennessee. Danny Greene, who has just begun coursework and an assistantship towards a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the Art Institute of Chicago. Lee Marchalonis, who is continuing her fine printmaking work while obtaining a Masters Degree in Library Science at Iowa University. All have served as an integral part and great help to us here and will be greatly missed.
